Farmville, VA - The community is mourning the loss of one favorite local restaurant. La Parota on South Main Street caught fire early Saturday morning, and Monday you can see right through the building.
Thankfully no lives were lost, but losing the well known business is a tragedy to those who live there. At around 5 a.m. Saturday morning, while most of Farmville was sleeping, four different fire departments battled a quickly spreading fire. It took crews 90 minutes to get the flames under control.
"It was pretty shocking," said Claude Diggs.
"I couldn't believe it. I was like, 'What? Are you serious?' And they said, 'yes,'" said Danielle Monroe, store manager at Fast Mart.
Danielle Monroe works at the Fast Mart next door to La Parota.
"Customers came in and said the building was on fire," said Monroe.
Monroe says the heat from the fire blew transformers in their building, knocking out power to Fast Mart and Enterprise Rent-a-car for several hours.
"That was the only Mexican Restaurant in town I wanna say until maybe a year or so ago," said Diggs.
It was a popular hangout for students and locals.
"I have friends who went to college out here, like once I kinda told them and once they saw my Facebook post of course... they seemed pretty upset about it," said Diggs.
The faithful customers say they're sad to see it go.
"So it's going to be missed?" we asked. "Oh yeah, definitely," said Diggs. "The chips and the cheese sauce were great,"
"The food was good, it was awesome there," said Monroe
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. We have heard that there are plans to rebuild, but that has not been confirmed to ABC 13 just yet.
