Carlisle holds public meeting on new parking meters

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Carlisle borough officials held a public meeting Monday night to give residents a chance to discuss parking meter changes that could come to downtown.

On hand were representatives with Duncan Solutions, a company based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin that makes so-called "smart meters."

The model on display took credit cards. There are also centralized kiosks that give drivers the option to pay with cash, credit cards and even smart phones. All are simply options, borough officials said, to update parking payment in Carlisle.  They said the current meters are just too old.

"Some of our meters are about over 25-years-old. We are having trouble with some of them, replacing some of the parts," Assistant Borough Manager Debra Figueroa said.

But if the borough goes the high-tech route, that could up the price for parking.

Residents may see some smart meters in the next few months either way. The borough may take advantage of a free pilot program to see what works best.

"We definitely want public input and public opinion before we make any decision," Figueroa said.

Borough officials plan to hold another public meeting in the near future.
