MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A series of transformers exploded in Mechanicsburg on Tuesday evening, causing widespread power outages.

It happened at around 6:25 near Simpson and Arch streets. Residents reported hearing popping sounds and then a huge fire on the power line, followed by a plume of black smoke.

Mechanicsburg police have currently restored power to traffic lights at two intersections using generators, but have fire police directing traffic at two others.

Emergency crews are assisting at the scene. Authorities have not determined what caused the explosion.

PPL reports just under 1,300 people are without power, mostly in Mechanicsburg Borough and Silver Spring Township. Authorities said power should be restored to those residents by 11 p.m. Tuesday.

To report an outage, call 1-800-DIAL-PPL.
