Vet: malnourished Chambersburg dog is on the mend

Posted: Updated:

A severely malnourished dog turned over to a Cumberland Valley animal hospital last week is on the mend.

"She is doing great. She has gained six pounds since Thursday," said Brenda Hawbaker, a manager at Lincoln Way Animal Hospital in Chambersburg. "She's eating and drinking. She's full of love."

Hawbaker said the 3-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier, who the staff named Eve, is a "sweet little dog."

"She has a wonderful appetite. She doesn't gouge herself. We have food for her all the time and she eats throughout the day as she's hungry."

Eve arrived at the hospital on Thursday weighing just 25 pounds and with a temperatures so low that it didn't register on a thermometer. On Tuesday she weighed in at 31.6 pounds.

A healthy weight for a dog her size and age is about 50 pounds.

"She's doing remarkable all things considered," said Hawbaker.

Staff posted on the hospital's Facebook page yesterday, saying Eve was "bright eyed and waggy tailed." She is currently in in-home care with one of the hospital's technicians and comes to the clinic during the day.

"We'll [be] doing our best to keep everyone posted," the post read. " Again, we appreciate everyone's concern for this poor baby."

Lincoln Way Animal Hospital and the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter are accepting donations and supplies to aid in Eve's care. Hawker said a dog food company is donating food but they are accepting dog blanket and coats.

Hawker said they are also accepting monetary donations to pay for Eve's care and antibiotics. Anyone interested in donating can contact the Lincoln Way Animal Hospital at 717-264-2615 or via email (lwah1986@comcast.net) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/mylwah).

Hawker said Eve will be up for adoption once her condition is under control but that could still be several months away.

The Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter is asking anyone with information on Eve's background or owner call 717-263-5791.
