The American Cancer Society says this is the last year for their Daffodil Days Fundraiser.
"This year we will be celebrating the 40th year for Daffodil Days however its also going to be our last year for the campaign," said Danielle Lavetan, Income Development Representative for the American Cancer Society.
Lavetan says although the fundraiser has been very successful in Pennsylvania it is not a nationwide event for the organization.
"We are combining our 12 divisions across the nation. Our volunteers and our executive team have decided we are going to focus our efforts on some of our other programs such as our Relay for Life events and our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. We, as an organization, are trying to be more streamlined and more consistent across the country ," said Lavetan.
News that this is the last year for the fundraiser shocked students and teachers at Good Hope Middle School in Hampden Township. Last year the school was the top Daffodil Days fundraiser for the region, raising over $11,000.00.
"They were shocked. A lot of kids, even their parents, remember doing Daffodil Days," said Clayton Brant, Good Hope Middle School Teacher.
Brant, an art teacher, is helping the students organize the fundraiser.
"Nearly half of the students and teachers in our school either lost someone or had someone survive cancer. This year, since it's the last year, we're going to go out strong," said Brant.
Chelsey Bunner, is an 8th grader at Good Hope, and lost her Grandmother to pancreatic cancer. Bunner was only 7 years old.
"We have put up a billboard in the school. These are all pictures of the people who have survived and passed of cancer. People can also write a message," said Bunner.
The students put together a video to help spread the word about their last Daffodil Days Fundraiser.
"Well, its sad since we do make that much money, but I do understand why they can't do Daffodil Days anymore. We really want to set our goal higher than last time, anything higher than 15 thousand would be great," said Bunner.
The American Cancer Society says they hope to raise more than $200,000.00 dollars in the midstate with the last Daffodil Days campaign.
"We hope that those passionate volunteers, once they have dealt with the grief of losing our beloved Daffodil Days, that they will want to join us in some other way," said Lavetan.
