PennDOT crews work around the clock in Franklin County

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

It was made pretty clear Tuesday that Franklin County would likely see the worst of the March snow hitting the midstate. Those warnings gave officials the time they needed to prepare, which made for a huge difference Wednesday.

PennDOT crews were able to pre-treat roadways and get their plow fleet in order well before the snow started falling.

Dave Rock, maintenance manager for PennDOT in Franklin County, said his crews were out clearing snow around midnight and were working 12 hours shifts until the storm passed.

Rock said pre-treating road surfaces and the temperature Wednesday made for a huge advantage in keeping the roads safe. By Wednesday afternoon, most roads were just wet and slushy.

"The untreated surfaces are snow covered, but underneath it's wet, so we put salt to it, it melts and that helps," he said. "If it were 25 degrees, it would be a different story."

As of noon Wednesday, no roads in the county were closed and there were no travel restrictions put into place by PennDOT.
