HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
A lockdown at the Dauphin County Prison was put in place after an inmate attempted to dig a hole in his jail cell wall and escape, officials said Wednesday.
Prison warden Dominick DeRose said the lockdown is expected to last for a week. Inmates must remain in their cells and visitation has been restricted.
"Visitation may be restricted up to a week while correctional officers sweep the prison for any other potential hazards," DeRose said in a news release. "We're working closely with investigators to determine how this incident occurred and what we can do to prevent it from happening in the future."
According to the news release, the inmate used a metal implement that he removed from a mounted tray in his cell to chip away at the wall. A damage amount had not yet been determined.
The facility has been in lockdown since 12:28 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Dauphin County District Attorney's Office is investigating the escape attempt and says it will file charges against the inmate within the next few days.
His name was not released pending the outcome of the investigation.
