HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Wednesday morning's snowfall may not have been as much as expected, but it did give PennDOT the chance to use a tow plow for the first time in Adams County.

The tow plow was used Tuesday to pre-treat Route 15 with salt brine in anticipation of the storm, and to clear snow from the highway Wednesday morning.

A tow plow is pulled behind a conventional plow truck equipped with a front plow. The truck is driven in the left lane and the tow plow steers out into the right lane, allowing the driver to clear both lanes of a highway at the same time.

PennDOT first began testing tow plows four winters ago on Interstate 99 in Centre County and has since added them to its fleet in several other parts of the state.
