LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Lancaster County man will spend life in prison with no chance of parole for killing his pregnant girlfriend.

Matthew Becker, 23, received the automatic life sentence Monday after jurors deliberated his penalty for more than an hour, but could not decide whether or not he should be put to death.

The jury last week found Becker guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Allison Walsh. Becker was also convicted of third-degree murder in the death of Walsh's unborn daughter.

He insisted during the trial that his handgun went off accidentally, while prosecutors maintained that he fired deliberately.

Walsh was seven months pregnant when the bullet struck her in the head August 12, 2011 at the Mastersonville home where the couple lived with Becker's parents. She and her baby died at a hospital.
