Pa. lawmaker wants drug tests for school jobs

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Pennsylvania lawmaker has unveiled legislation that would require drug screenings for anyone seeking a job at a public or private school.

House Bill 810 would also require drug screenings for prospective employees at intermediate units and vocational technical schools.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Allegheny, who said prospective school employees must have criminal background checks and child abuse clearances, but there is no law in place for pre-employment drug screening.

"Many employers require drug screening prior to offering an applicant a position," DeLuca said in a statement. "We too, have a responsibility to prevent those under the influence of drugs from serving as role models to our young people."

DeLuca said his legislation will likely be referred to the House Education Committee.
