HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Mike Krancer, the secretary of the state Department of Environmental Protection, will step down from his post next month, Governor Tom Corbett announced today.

Krancer plans to return to his home in Montgomery County to practice law. He will step down April 15.

"I appreciate Mike's unwavering commitment to this job, knowing that it took him away from spending quality time with his wife and children,'' Corbett said in a statement. "While I am sorry to lose his expertise in the administration, I am glad this is an opportunity for him to go back home."

Corbett appointed Krancer to his cabinet in January 2011.

E. Christopher Abruzzo, deputy chief of staff for Governor Tom Corbett, will serve as acting secretary. Abruzzo will hold both positions until Corbett names Krancer's successor.
