Fort Indiantown Gap begins controlled burns

FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. (WHTM) -

The state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs said it has begun controlled burns at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County to reduce the risk of wildfires.

The burns will be held between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., weather permitting, and will be conducted on about 3,000 to 4,000 acres at the military facility through May.

Shannon Henry, manager of the DMVA's forest program, said the controlled burns help to reduce the potential for major wildfires at Fort Indiantown Gap by reducing the amount of combustible materials that exist naturally on the forest floor.

Henry said the burns are performed by properly trained personnel only when conditions such as humidity, wind and temperature are ideal for managing fires, and not conducted unless all required weather conditions are met.
