LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

Officials are investigating the cause of a large fire that destroyed an historic Lancaster County mansion.

The fire burned for at least five hours on Saturday night at the Gammache Mansion on New Holland Avenue in Manheim Township.

Firefighters were told to let the vacant building burn to the ground.

The fire chief says the decision was reached because the building hasn't been occupied in years, and it wasn't safe to enter.

Investigators believe the fire started on the roof.
