Snow in Franklin County creates hassle

Posted: Updated:

Monday morning, it wasn't exactly the sights or sounds of the spring season in Franklin County as Winter Weather Advisories played on the radio and snow blanketed the region white.

For the second time this month, PennDOT crews worked around the clock to keep up with the snow. Dave Rock, of the PennDOT maintenance building in Franklin County, said his crews started the day very early.

"It started to snow about 3 o'clock this morning, but we had crews out on the interstate at midnight waiting for it, because they never know when they are going to start. We wanted to be ready for it," he said.

Rock said usually by now crews are busy preparing for other road repair projects. Keeping up with winter weather could put them behind.

"We'd like to have everything cleaned up by now, have all the sweeping done and everything, but we have not really started on that yet because it's still winter, it's still snowing," he said.

He added that the constant thawing and refreezing of surfaces has caused some potholes. Those will also need to be repaired when the weather gets warmer.

Meanwhile, inside the Chambersburg Mall, spring-like colors and decorations helped to keep people in the appropriate seasonal mentality.

Many kids stopped by to visit with the Easter Bunny, although they had to wear snow boots and winter coats.

Still, it didn't get three year-old Carly and her mother, Brittney Luther, down.  Luther said if they have to, they will do their Easter egg hunt in the snow.
