Harrisburg mayor announces recycling initiatives

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson said she hopes to cut down on trash in the city by making recycling bins free and hosting a free day at the incinerator.

At the news conference today, Thompson said these initiatives will be for Harrisburg residents only.

"We're not opening up our flood gates for some scum bag that comes from Perry County who got the money, and pocketed it, and comes here and want to dump it for free," she said.

The Harrisburg Authority, which oversees the incinerator, told abc27 that they are unaware of any plans for a free day.

The recycling bins, which Thompson wants to give away for free, currently cost $5.

Thompson said the city may also hire a private company to handle the city's waste collection if a company could come up with a new system that makes sense.
