Perry County residents seek positive action after negative remark

SHERMANS DALE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Shannon Evener works at the Market Street Restaurant and Deli in Newport.  She says customers helped them turn Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson's comment, referring to illegal dumpers from Perry County as "scumbags," into a positive.

Evener and the staff decided to name a pizza, loaded with everything, "Scumbag Pizza." A dollar from each sale will go to local charities.

"We decided to take something bad have a little fun" said Evener, "but do something good."

The restaurant plans to sell the pizza through the weekend.

In addition, Reese Crane, part of the faith based group Love Beyond Ourselves Mission, plans to travel into Harrisburg Friday to help pick up trash. They will meet at the Bethesda Mission at 4 p.m. Participants are asked to bring gloves and trash bags.

Most of the members of Love Beyond Ourselves Mission are from Perry County and Crane says he was disappointed to hear Thompson's remark.

He said people in Perry County are loyal and would do anything to help others.
