Group to convert 2 empty Harrisburg plots into gardens

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Harrisburg nonprofit will start work Saturday to convert two empty plots of land into gardens and they are asking for help from volunteers.

Green Urban Initiative will host a work day at their plot on 2257 Atlas St. in Uptown on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the work is finished. They are asking that volunteers bring drinks as well as snacks and lunch items to share.

Board member Maureen Maxwell said the group cleared four dumpsters of trash from the plot and alley in January. Now she hopes a garden will help bring the community together.

"It helps build friendships with neighborhoods, it helps to feed families, it helps people to bring back that pride that they have in their neighborhood and their city," she said.

Atlas Street is unmarked but is located between Woodbine and Emerald Streets and between 4th and 5th Streets.

Work will begin on the second garden, located next to Wesley Union A.M.E Zion Church, on May 1.

The group will also be participating in a nationwide cleanup even on April 20. To register a cleanup event in your area, contact john@historicharrisburg.com or call 233-4646.
