Sleet and Snow Cause Dangerous Driving Conditions in Bedford County

Bedford Co., VA - April snow and sleet showers proved to be dangerous in some areas. Slick roads made for tough travel conditions in Bedford County.

It was peak rush hour when police began responding to multiple weather related wrecks; a sight you don't often see in early April.

As soon as the rain turned to sleet, cars wound up spun around, on the side of the road. A minivan spun out of control after hitting an icy patch on 460 East.

On Falling Creek Road, a slick spot flipped this car.

Police say the driver, lucky to be alive, was taken to the hospital.

And on 460-West, "My car started hydroplaning" said Liberty University senior, Laura Lawhorn, who was driving home from class.

"I thought I could get it under control and then it flipped over, and I think it was twice, and the next thing I know, I was upside down trying to get out" said Lawhorn.

A driver stopped to help and managed to pry open her passenger-side door.

She wound up with nothing but a scrape.

"It was very scary; I just couldn't believe that I wasn't hurt. I'm just thankful to be alive" she said.

Parts of Bedford County saw accumulations of snow and ice, near three inches. Not the start to Spring, many were hoping for.

When asked if he was ready for the winter weather to wrap up, one Bedford man replied, "Yes, yes, any moment now would be fine."

Parts further west received multiple inches of snow.

Police were kept busy in Bedford County; but in Lynchburg, dispatchers say police did not respond to a single car crash related to Thursday night's winter weather.
