New Route 116 bridge opens in Spring Grove

Posted: Updated:

The new Route 116 bridge at the south end of Spring Grove opened to traffic Wednesday afternoon.

The crossing had been closed since May 2012 for a $4.3 million construction project to demolish the old bridge and build the new bridge over the West Branch of the Codorus Creek.

The old bridge was built in 1923 and was classified as structurally deficient.

PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said the new bridge is 14-feet wider, allowing room for two 11-foot-wide travel lanes, two five-foot-wide shoulders and a five-foot-eight-inch-wide sidewalk on the west side.
