Hundreds Gather for Virginia Tech Day of Remembrance

Posted:

Blacksburg, VA – Tuesday marks the sixth anniversary since 32 faculty and students were gunned down on Virginia Tech's campus, an event that remains the single worst mass shooting in US History.

The Day of Remembrance has been scaled back in recent years, but there were still a few events on campus.

The community picnic Tuesday was a more upbeat event than most remembrances. The event did not have a tone at all of being subdued - actually giving off the vibe of community.

Hundreds of people packed themselves into the Commonwealth Ballroom to get some lunch. The picnic was moved to that location in Squires Student Center because of the wet weather and issues with mud on the drillfield.

Beyond the lines, it really did feel like a big picnic, which made the event's organizer very happy.

"Regardless if we were here or somewhere else in the country - or anywhere in the world, we all feel for everyone and we all want to remember and be together as a community because we are all Hokies," said Sirisha Iruvanti, a senior from Yorktown.

At the memorial itself, there was heavy traffic as many as folks came by, taking advantage of the beautiful weather to pay quiet homage to the victims.

Without a candlelight vigil this year, this was the expected turnout.
