Kindergarten Registration Starts in Lynchburg

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Wednesday is the day to sign up your son or daughter for kindergarten in Lynchburg City Schools.

The bar is getting raised in classrooms across the country, and kindergarten at Paul Munro Elementary is no exception.

This sure isn't the same sort of kindergarten you went to.  At Paul Munro Elementary, students are reading two hours a day.

Kindergarten isn't just about play time anymore.

"I have the best job in town," said Kate Wall, kindergarten teacher.

Wall has taught kindergarten 19 years. She says the best prepared kindergartners have gone to pre-school, they show interest in writing their name and letters, can sit quietly and listen for five minutes, and can emotionally detach from parents.

"We have found that children that come with just those few elements are going to be more successful," said Wall.

But the ones who aren't, Paul Munro promises won't be left in the dust. The student-teacher ratio is 18:1. Principal Donna Baer would love even smaller class sizes, but says all students are given one-on-one attention.

"We want to do everything we can to encourage that love of learning throughout their elementary school years," said Baer.

"My youngest is going to be starting kindergarten in the fall," said Amy Quinn, a parent.

Quinn is signing up her son for kindergarten. Her two older boys have already graduated Paul Munro's kindergarten program. They learned about money and fractions - a curriculum that impressed Quinn from the start.

"Considering I already had to look on the Internet to help my second grader with his homework, I feel like it's a good thing they're starting early in kindergarten," said Quinn.

Getting kids comfortable with technology is very important today. Every classroom at Paul Munro has a smart board. But  the principal would also love more laptops in her classrooms. After all, that's the future.
