Police: Cumberland Co. man lost thousands to sweepstake scam

Posted: Updated:

An Upper Allen Township man recently lost thousands of dollars in a sweepstake scam, according to township police.

Police say the victim received phone calls saying he won a large amount of money from a lottery or sweepstakes. The caller then requested that the victim transfer money to prepay taxes and fees associated with the winnings.

Police warn that scams that seem to good to be true almost always are.

"The probability is that if you did not buy a ticket for a sanctioned lottery, you probably did not win," they said in a press release.

Once a victim sends money, their name and telephone number is often traded and sold to other scam artists, policed warned.

"These subsequent scam artists will solicit even more money from victims until they have none left to send," they said warning that the elderly are often the main target of these types of scams.
