Tornado Watch Until 10 PM, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Discontinued

Update 5:50 p.m.:

All Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been discontinued, but our area is under a Tornado Watch until 10 p.m.

We have gotten reports of downed power lines caused by the thunderstorms that passed through our area. 

Appalachian Power is also reporting that 8,554 people in Virginia have lost power. You can get the outage numbers here.

Update 4:30 p.m.:

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued until 5:30 p.m. for Campbell County, Amherst County, City of Lynchburg County, Bedford County, Appomattox County and Pittsylvania County.

Update 3 p.m.:

There is a Tornado Watch for all areas east of the Blue Ridge Parkway until 10 p.m. Friday.

Moderate to heavy rain and gusty thunderstorms will push through from west to east Friday  afternoon and into the evening. The severe threat will mainly be damaging straight-line wind gusts 40 to 70mph, however, conditions are favorable for the development of isolated small tornadoes, so monitor conditions closely this evening. All precipitation will move east of the area by midnight.

Cooler, drier, and dramatically less humid this weekend. Both days bring sunshine and highs in the lower 60s, but Sunday brings a chillier breeze from the northeast. Lows Saturday night will drift into the upper 30s.

Cool early next week as well, with some showers possible late Wednesday into Thursday.

An intense cold front moves into the region Friday.

The latest severe weather outlook by the Storm Prediction Center covers our region with a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening.

Moderate to heavy rain and gusty thunderstorms will push through from west to east this afternoon and into the evening. The severe threat possibility will mainly be damaging straight-line wind gusts 40 to 70mph. Rain amounts will average 0.50" to 1.25" before ending around midnight.

Cooler, drier, and dramatically less humid Saturday and Sunday.
