CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
Changed at 4:45 p.m. to update the first paragraph. The waste leaked from the truck, it did not spill.
Interstate 81 South has reopened after human waste leaked from a truck that was driving down the road this morning.
The highway was closed near Carlisle at mile marker 49 around 10:50 a.m. At 10:55 a.m., traffic was backed up for several miles.
PennDOT Spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler said an employee spotted the waste on the road and called police. A nearby PennDOT crew came by the area to spray down the road. The driver did not know his truck was leaking and was found down the road.
Originally, police believed the truck was carrying manure but later discovered it was human waste.
A motorcyclist also slid on the waste but was not hurt and was able to leave the scene.
The road was closed for about an hour an a half. It reopened around 12:30 p.m.
