Hometown Heroes send care boxes to midstate soldiers

Posted: Updated:

These Hometown Heroes have been sending care boxes to soldiers for more than a decade. It's a tradition that needs financial help to survive.

The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary in Carlisle has the names of more than 690 soldiers in the midstate who are serving in Afghanistan.

They've been able to send 390 of them care boxes, but they need funding for the rest.

The care boxes contain everything from Girl Scout cookies to tooth paste to books, even comics.

Lois Gleim, a member of the AMVETS, describes reactions of soldiers who receive their care boxes. "We get thank you letters, they can't believe people they don't even know are sending them a are box."

She says that this is a way to repay them for their service. "If we didn't have our soldiers over there fighting to keep us free, we wouldn't be able to have the freedom that we have."
