Poll: Leading Dems top Corbett in governor's race

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Three Democratic challengers would easily beat Governor Tom Corbett in the race for governor if the election were held today, according to a new poll.

The Quinnipiac University poll found that Corbett would be defeated in a run against former U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz or Treasurer Rob McCord, who each led the Republican incumbent by margins of 9 percentage points or higher.

Registered voters preferred Sestak over Corbett 48-34 percent, while Schwartz led Corbett 47-34 percent and McCord topped the governor 44-35 percent, according to the poll.

The poll also found that Pennsylvania voters disapprove 47-38 percent of the job Corbett is doing, and say 50-32 percent that he does not deserve reelection.

In a possible Democratic primary for governor, 59 percent of voters were undecided. Sestak and Schwartz would each receive 15 percent of the vote, but no other candidate scored above 3 percent, the poll found.

The telephone survey of 1,235 registered voters was conducted April 19-24 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.8 percent.
