HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Interstate 83 South was closed briefly at the scene of a pedestrian accident near the Paxton Street exit in Harrisburg following a police pursuit on foot.

All southbound lanes were shut down between Exit 46A for Interstate 283 South and Exit 45 for Paxton Street when the accident occurred at around 12:50 p.m.

An abc27 News photographer at the Harrisburg Mall recorded video of police officers running across the parking lot just moments before the man went onto the interstate and was struck by a vehicle.

Later in the evening, police released information regarding the man involved in the accident. They say officers responded to reports of disorderly conduct at the Harrisburg Mall Macy's.

Upon their arrival, police saw the suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Jalani Martin of Steelton, running out of the store at its rear entrance. An officer gave chase, pursuing him through the store and across Paxton Street.

Martin then ran down an embankment onto I-83 where he was struck by a vehicle.

He was conscious when EMTs placed him on a stretcher. Martin was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center where he went into surgery. Officials say he is in critical condition.

Anyone with more information about this incident may contact police at 717-564-2550.
