A Harrisburg man who was facing a possible death sentence for the murder of his live-in girlfriend will instead spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole.

The life term for Miguel Figueroa-Novoa came Tuesday afternoon after a Dauphin County jury could not agree on a sentence during the penalty phase of his trial.

Figueroa-Novoa, 25, was convicted Friday of first-degree murder in the killing of 19-year-old Yarelis Berrios at their Ivey Lane apartment two days before Christmas in 2010.

Figueroa-Novoa was also found guilty of attempted homicide for seriously wounding Berrios' mother, Lithz Serrano, by shooting her five times before turning the gun on himself in a failed suicide attempt.

Serrano, who is now permanently disabled, said Friday that she did not want Figueroa-Novoa sentenced to die.
