Police investigate armed robberies near York College

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

York College was under lockdown early Thursday after reports of armed robberies near the campus.

The college sent an alert to students around midnight, ordering them to stay indoors while police searched for a suspect. The lockdown was lifted by 1:30 a.m.

Spring Garden Township police said they are investigating two robberies; in the 700 block of Colonial Avenue at 11:40 p.m. and in the 900 block of Grantley Road five minutes later.

In both cases, police said students at the college were approached by a man armed with a long gun who demanded money.

The man robbed on Colonial Avenue did not have anything taken from him, but the woman on Grantley Road had a cell phone stolen from her, police said. Neither was hurt, but the woman was taken to a hospital for a check-up.

The description of the robber is the same in both incidents. He was said to be a 18- to 20-year-old black male, about 5'7" tall with a medium build, and wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, according to police.

Anyone with information regarding the robberies may call the Spring Garden Township Police Department at 717-843-0851.
