Extra Security at Campbell Co. School Because of Rumor

Campbell Co., VA - The Campbell County Sheriff's Office beefed up its presence at William Campbell Combined School Thursday because of a rumor that someone was "going to shoot up the school."

The message went viral on Facebook, Twitter and through text messages.

The sheriff says there's no reason to believe there's any truth to the rumor. But attendance here was down tremendously: 250 students, nearly half of the entire school, was absent.

There were a lot of empty chairs in 12-year-old Ayla Deaner's classes. Even she was afraid to come to school.

"I didn't want to get shot," she said.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office says the rumor - that there was going to be a shooting at William Campbell Combined School- apparently stems from the homicide in Gladys last weekend. The suspect , Joshua Graves, 23, graduated from there. He's accused of shooting Travis "Duck" Daniel, a popular 24-year-old from Concord.

There have been about a half dozen deputies both inside and outside of the school. The superintendent also released a statement to the media saying that the school system is working in conjunction with the sheriff's office to find out where these rumors originated from."

"We don't believe that there's any real threat. But, we're taking it seriously and we're gonna be there," said Captain Cindy Caldwell .

"It involves kids again. And it involves outrages for no ungodly reason and people could end up losing their lives over stupidness," said one parent.

Dozens of parents let their children stay home. They weren't taking any chances.

"They weren't in school today and I don't know that they'll be here tomorrow," said a parent.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Campbell County Sheriff's Office at (434) 592-9580.
