Police announce charges against man struck on I-83

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police have announced criminal charges against a Steelton man who was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 83 this week while running from officers at the Harrisburg Mall.

Swatara Township police said they will charge 18-year-old Jalani D. Martin with receiving stolen property, escape, harassment and stalking, and pedestrians walking on or entering highways.

The charges will be filed once Martin has sufficiently recovered from his injuries and is able to appear in court, police said in a news release Friday.

An officer on Monday had responded to the Macy's store for a report of a person who was causing a disturbance and harassing employees when Martin ran out a rear entrance, police said.

The officer chased Martin back through the store and across Paxton Street before he ran down an embankment and onto I-83 where he was struck, police said.

The incident caused a temporary shutdown of I-83 South in the area.
