HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Can't get in and can't get out: that's what some are saying about the new Interstate 81 ramp closures soon to take effect in Harrisburg.

Already placed on southbound Front Street is a sign warning drivers that come May 13, the roadblocks are coming.

PennDOT has hired an independent contractor to tackle two bridges on the ramps in mid-May. The construction crews will repair and replace the bridge decks, substructure and expansion joints on the ramp from northbound Front Street to I-81 South and on the I-81 South ramp to southbound Front Street.

Each bridge will be closed for up to three months, starting with the northbound Front Street ramp where the work is set to begin May 13.

PennDOT spokesman Mike Crochunis said the $1.3 million project is scheduled for 90 days, but should be completed sooner. The current I-81 North to northbound Front Street ramp closure should be completed by July 4, leaving a overlap of a six weeks.

PennDOT hopes they won't have to field too many angry calls in that time span.

"Not yet for this one," Crochunis said. "We still have about 10 days until we implement the detour so, it's good to get out ahead of it."
