The Diocese of Harrisburg has confirmed that Bishop Joseph McFadden died from a heart attack in Philadelphia on Thursday, May 2.
The diocese, quoting a report by the publication "Catholic Philly," indicates the 65-year-old McFadden called Monsignor Joseph Garvin at around 6:30 that morning and asked him to take him to the hospital because he believed he was having a heart attack.
En route to the hospital, McFadden asked for Garvin to say a prayer of absolution. Shortly after, McFadden slumped over in the car. Garvin pulled off the road, called 911 and tried to administer CPR.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and took over resuscitation efforts. After trying to revive McFadden, they took him by ambulance to Holy Redeemer Hospital in Philadelphia.
There, medical personnel tried to resuscitate him, but McFadden was later pronounced dead.
His body will lie in repose beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg. The public can view the body through Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
McFadden's funeral will take place on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Lower Paxton Township.
