What should Camp Hill do with vacant elementary school?

CAMP HILL, Pa. (WHTM) -

It's costing more than $30,000 a year for the Camp Hill School District to maintain a vacant elementary school. But it appears the school board is close to making a decision about the building's future.

The old Schaeffer Elementary School has sat vacant since 2011.

There are three proposals on the table. All call for the building to be sold.

One proposal seeks to turn the building into condos for seniors. Another would raze the building in favor of single family homes. A third proposal would turn the site into a community arts center that would preserve the building and its green space.

"It's been very consistent throughout," said school board president Dan Alleman. "There's been a lot more support for the arts center."

Board members will vote on a negotiation path at a meeting next week. They stress the decision will not be final unless they can agree on a fair price and solution that keeps taxpayers happy.
