HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

More than 1,000 people on Wednesday attended the funeral Mass of Bishop Joseph McFadden, the spiritual leader for about 250,000 Roman Catholics in the Diocese of Harrisburg.

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput presided over the Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, which ended shortly before 1 p.m.

McFadden's burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Swatara Township.

McFadden died unexpectedly in Philadelphia last week after suffering a heart attack while attending a meeting of the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania. He was 65 years old.

The funeral service capped several days of memorial services while the bishop's body lay in state at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg.

Bishop McFadden was the tenth Bishop of Harrisburg. He was appointed June 22, 2010 by then Pope Benedict XVI. He was installed as Bishop of Harrisburg on August 18, 2010 in St. Patrick Cathedral, Harrisburg.
