Wildwood Park closed for tanker fuel spill

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Dauphin County's Wildwood Park is closed to the public Thursday because of the heavy smoke caused by a fuel tanker fire along Interstate 81.

The crash also caused a diesel fuel leak that spilled into Wildwood Lake and Paxton Creek, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

A DEP spokeswoman said fuel from the spill was washed into a storm drain during the firefighting efforts, the fuel spill then went into Paxton Creek and the Wildwood Park wetlands.

DEP and a hazardous materials crew are working to clean up the fuel and contain the spill.

All programs scheduled at the park for the day have been canceled, and the park will remain closed until further notice.
