PennDOT: I-81 and ramps closed indefinitely

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Interstate 81 and two ramps in the area of the Route 22/322 interchange near Harrisburg will remain closed until further notice because of damage caused by a massive tanker fire early Thursday.

PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said the fire "pulverized" the bridge deck on the ramp from I-81 northbound ramp to Route 22/322 West, and the heat buckled the beams on that bridge and another structure overhead that carries eastbound Route 22/322 over the interstate and into the city.

PennDOT is evaluating the safety of the bridges before allowing traffic on the ramps and on the interstate below, and expects the closures to last for some time.

"Don't expect to be using Interstate 81 today and don't expect to be using the ramps coming into the city or that ramp where the crash occurred," Penny said. "They're definitely out of commission."

To alleviate congestion, PennDOT has opened the ramp to Front Street ramp from Interstate 81 North. The ramp had been closed since April 8 for bridge work.
