Corbett signs disaster proclamation for I-81 fire

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Governor Tom Corbett has signed a disaster emergency proclamation following a tanker truck fire that shut down Interstate 81 near Harrisburg.

The proclamation allows Pennsylvania to seek reimbursement from the Federal Highway Administration for some of the more $10 million in damage.

The crash occurred Thursday morning when the tanker, fully loaded with diesel fuel, overturned and caught fire on the ramp from I-81 North to Route 22/322 West in Susquehanna Township.

The intense heat from the fire buckled the bridge's steel beams and damaged the concrete bridge deck so badly that officials feared two spans could collapse onto the interstate.

A bridge above the fire, on the ramp from southbound I-81 to eastbound Route 22 toward Harrisburg, was also damaged.

Interstate 81 is expected to be closed at least through the weekend, and long-term repairs are expected to take at least two months.
