A New York woman died in a four-vehicle crash Friday that closed a section of Interstate 81 in Cumberland County for more than five hours.
Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall identified the woman as 64-year-old Kathleen Weed, of Pittsford.
Weed was the passenger in a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV that was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer in the northbound lanes of I-81 at Exit 57 for Route 114 in Silver Spring Township, according to investigators.
State police Trooper Robert Hicks said the semi was unable to stop in time as traffic began to slow due to a backlog. The truck pushed the Tahoe into another tractor-trailer, which then impacted a third rig ahead of it.
Weed's husband George was driving the SUV. He was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center and was listed in critical condition Friday night, Hall said.

The crash, which remains under investigation by the state police, occurred just after 4 p.m. and caused the closure of I-81's northbound lanes at Exit 52A for Route 11 in Middlesex Township.
The northbound lanes reopened once the scene was cleared at around 9:30 p.m.
