Campaign finance: who's the front-runner for Harrisburg mayor?

Posted: Updated:

Three of the four Democratic candidates for Harrisburg mayor filed campaign reports with the Dauphin County Board of Elections this week.

According to the latest numbers, business owner Eric Papenfuse is the clear leader in dollars raised -- $143,019 to date. In early April, Papenfuse contributed $100,000 from his own pocket. The rest of the cash came from individual donors, as well as $20,000 from the Harrisburg Capital PAC.

City Controller Dan Miller has generated $102,618 so far, with the majority of his cash coming from smaller, individual donations.

Mayor Linda Thompson has raised $66,588 from both small and large donations from residents, several city employees and area law firms.

Voters abc27 spoke with said they're not concerned with how Papenfuse funded his campaign.

"That means you're not going to waste your money, that you think you have a good chance and you'll do a good job," Allison Hill resident Cynthia Nimmons-Thomas said.

She said she is currently torn between voting for Papenfuse or Miller.

Midtown resident Paul Hood said if elected, he hopes Papenfuse will run the city the way he runs his bookstore, the Midtown Scholar.

"A lot of people are knocking it, like 'oh he just owns a book store'," Hood said. "But I think that's a good catalyst for what he's trying to do."

Juanita Burke of Uptown said she is still deciding whether to vote for Thompson like she did in 2009, or change things up by supporting Miller.

"Dan -- he seems really interesting," Burke said. "I think when it boils down to it, it'll probably be between Linda and Dan -- my personal thing."

Candidate Lewis Butts has not filed a campaign finance report with Dauphin County.

The Democratic primary election is May 21. To view the candidates' full campaign finance reports go to: http://www.dauphincounty.org/government/Elections-and-Voter-Registration/Campaign-Finances/Pages/default.aspx.
