Governor Tom Corbett has announced a change of leadership in the state Department of Education.
Corbett said Wednesday he will nominate Dr. William Harner, superintendent of the Cumberland Valley School District, to replace outgoing Education Secretary Ronald Tomalis.
Tomalis is leaving his post May 31 to become Special Adviser to the Governor on Higher Education.
Harner's nomination will need to be confirmed by the Senate.
Harner, 56, had a 20-year military career following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and from there served school districts in Gainesville, Ga., Toledo, Ohio, and Philadelphia.
He has also served as deputy superintendent for the Recovery School District of New Orleans, where he oversaw the reopening of nine school buildings after Hurricane Katrina.
He has been superintendent at Cumberland Valley since 2008. The district said his resignation from Cumberland Valley is effective June 1.
