HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) -

A funeral service was held in Hershey this morning for former Pennsylvania Governor George Leader.

Gov. Tom Corbett and former governors Ed Rendell, Mark Schweiker, Tom Ridge and Dick Thornburgh were among about 500 people who paid their last respects at the Derry Presbyterian Church.

Former lieutenant governors Mark Singel and William Scranton also were in attendance.

Leader was 95 when he died May 9 at the Country Meadows retirement home in Hershey, one of the many retirement homes he and his wife started.

The couple also founded Providence Place Retirement Communities and Ecumenical Retirement Community.

Leader, a Democrat, was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1955 when he was elected governor of a heavily-registered Republican state in a landslide victory.

The York County native took office at the age of 37 and remains Pennsylvania's second-youngest governor.
