Commissioner to undergo bone marrow transplant

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Franklin County Commissioner Bob Thomas said Friday he will stick with his post while he undergoes a bone marrow transplant.

Thomas announced that he has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, a rare bone and blood disorder that effects the bone marrow.

He will undergo treatments to prepare for the transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

"You all have no idea how happy I am to be here today," he said. "That support structure the case manager was concerned about at Hopkins, that's the support structure I'm talking about. It's people that are near you and supportive. It's those unseen prayers. It's absolutely incredible."

Thomas was joined during the announcement by family, friends and several county officials.
