Authorities are investigating a fatal head-on collision on Route 30 in Lancaster County.
On Sunday, May 19 just after midnight, officers were dispatched to the area of Route 30 and Prospect Road on the report of a reckless driver. According to officials, a 2006 Hyundai Elantra was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Route 30.
Moments later, police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Route 30 near Hill Street.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the 27-year-old female driver of the Elantra and the 21-year-old female driver and male passenger of a second car—a 2002 Ford Taurus—trapped in their vehicles.
Witnesses had stopped to help, including a passing motorist who was an EMT.
Police reported that the passenger in the Taurus and the driver of the Elantra were unresponsive. All three were taken to Lancaster General Hospital.
The passenger of the Taurus was pronounced dead at the hospital. His identity has not yet been released. Both drivers remain hospitalized.
A preliminary investigation concluded that the driver of the Elantra was traveling east in the westbound lane of Route 30, while the Taurus was traveling westbound. The two cars collided head-on near Hill Street.
That portion of Route 30 was closed until around 7:30 a.m.
Officers are investigating whether or not alcohol was a factor in the crash.
