Corbett suit against NCAA heads to court

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Lawyers for the NCAA and Governor Tom Corbett will be in federal court in Harrisburg today.

Earlier this year, the governor filed a lawsuit against the NCAA for its sanctions against Penn State. Those sanctions were in response to the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The NCAA is trying to get the suit dismissed.

A federal judge will hear arguments today from lawyers on whether the case should move forward. Last summer the NCAA announced unprecedented sanctions against the school including a $60 million fine, a four year ban on bowl games, a loss of scholarships, and vacated all winning games from 1998-2011.

The governor says the penalties are hurting small businesses, students and athletes that had nothing to do with the scandal. The suit asks that all sanctions against Penn State be thrown out. The NCAA says the suit is without merit.

The hearing begins at 2 this afternoon. abc27 News will be there and will have complete coverage on air and online.
