I-81 ramp from East Shore closes for the summer

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A new construction project that will close the ramp from northbound Front Street to Interstate 81 South in Harrisburg kicked off early Tuesday morning.

PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said the ramp will remain closed for up to three months while repairs are made to the bridge over Front Street.

A detour will direct traffic north on Front Street, then east on Linglestown Road to the interchange with Route 22/322, and then eastbound on Route 22/322 to the ramp in the I-81 Exit 67 interchange to southbound I-81.

Once work is completed on the bridge, work will begin on the bridge over Front Street that connects southbound I-81 to southbound Front Street. This ramp will also be closed for up to three months.

The $1.36 million project was scheduled to start May 13, but was postponed because of a May 9 tanker fire along Interstate 81 at the Route 22/322 interchange.

The bridge restoration work is a separate project from a project currently underway and wrapping up this summer on the I-81 George Wade Memorial Bridge. As part of that work, the ramp from I-81 North to Front Street north and south was closed in April for up to three months.
