Work wrapping up on new Lowther Street bridge

Posted: Updated:
LEMOYNE, Pa. (WHTM) -

The new Lowther Street bridge over Interstate 83 in Lemoyne was slated to open to one lane of traffic in each direction Wednesday afternoon, and should be open to two lanes each way by the end of next week.

PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said the dismantling of a temporary bridge alongside the new bridge should begin soon.

The old Lowther Street bridge, which has been demolished, was a major contributing factor to the bottleneck on I-83 North approaching Harrisburg and the Route 581 interchange, an area known as the York split.

The new two-span bridge is wide enough to accommodate four lanes of I-83, as well as three ramps underneath.
