PennDOT: Tanker fire repairs will take months

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The road to repair the damage left by a May 9 tanker fire along Interstate 81 near Harrisburg will be a long one.

It all boils down to fixing two parts of roadway: the ramp where the tanker overturned and burned and a bridge above it damaged by the fire.

PennDOT laid out its timeline to reopen both areas on Wednesday.

The Route 22 East bridge into Harrisburg is set to reopen in November. PennDOT is in the process of fabricating beams, and is scheduled to accept bids from contractors next week. Traffic currently shares the westbound bridge.

"We are going to work as fast as we can, " PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said.

Meanwhile, the ramp from Interstate 81 North to Route 22/322, where the crash occurred, may reopen by the end of the summer. Crews have been preparing for demolition work, and drivers may see the bridge deck removed next week.

For now, drivers on I-81 northbound who want to go to Route 22/322 westbound will have to continue north to Exit 72B and return to the interchange from the southbound lanes.

"I've been dealing with it. The first few days I was fed up.," Shannon Daron of Marysville said.
