YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

A York County couple was arrested on assault charges after police said they stabbed each other during a night of heavy drinking and a heated argument over who should win 'American Idol.'

Gregory L. Stambaugh, 57, and Karen Elaine Harrelson, 48, of Red Lion, had been watching the show at Stambaugh's home in West Manchester Township on May 15 before officers were called to the Lycan Drive address for a domestic dispute involving a knife, according to charging documents.

Responding officers found Stambaugh and Harrelson on the front porch with blood all over their clothing. Harrelson had cuts to her right wrist and fingers, while Stambaugh had a puncture wound to the left forearm, documents state.

Both were treated at York Hospital and later questioned by police.

Harrelson told investigators that she argued with Stambaugh, her fiancee, over the show in the basement and went to the kitchen to cut a piece of cake. She said Stambaugh followed her, cut her wrist with another knife, then hit her in the head and threw her down before she stabbed him in self-defense, according to the criminal complaint.

She said she drank four beers during the night, and that Stambaugh had been drinking beer and rum, documents state.

Stambaugh's version of the events was that Harrelson went to the kitchen during the 'American Idol' argument, returned to the basement with the knife and stabbed him in the arm. He said he followed her to the kitchen to take the knife, did not strike her or throw her down, and that she was likely cut in the struggle for the knife, according to the complaint.

He said Harrelson had been drinking beer and tequila since 5 a.m., and that he had beer and a pint of scotch since around noon, documents state.

Both were sent to York County Prison on one count of felony aggravated assault and two counts of simple assault. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 8.

Stambaugh's bail was set at $70,000, while Harrelson was being held on $30,000 bail.
