Write-in votes could put Miller back in mayor's race

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg's mayoral race is between two candidates, but a tally of write-in votes from the Republican primary may make it a three-way contest.

City Controller Dan Miller, who came in second behind Eric Papenfuse in the Democratic primary Tuesday, unofficially beat Papenfuse with 196 of the 424 write-in votes on the GOP ballot.

Papenfuse received 163 write-in votes from Republicans.

A minimum of 100 votes is needed to make the general election ballot in November.

The official tally won't be known until next week, once the votes have been certified by the Dauphin County Board of Elections.

His campaign consultant, Chuck Ardo, said Miller is still undecided about running as a Republican. He said Miller is taking a few days off and will decide what to do next when he gets back, but added that Miller's supporters are encouraging him to stay in the race.

If Miller runs, he would face Papenfuse, who defeated incumbent Mayor Linda Thompson, and independent Nevin Mindlin.
